The Greater Sudbury Police Pipes and Drums (also known as the Greater
Sudbury Police Pipe Band) was inaugurated in the summer of 1988 at the opening ceremonies of the World Junior Games. It began with a small group consisting of 4 Pipers and 6 Drummers. Founding members included Constable Larry Kilby, Staff Sergeant Dave Linney and Don Farquharson. The Band wears the “Ramsey” tartan in honour of John Ramsey, founding father of the City of Greater Sudbury , and it also happens to be blue, which symbolized the “police” aspect of the Band.
The Band attends between 80 to 100 events per year including parades throughout Northern Ontario and the Police Memorial in Ottawa . They practice every Monday evening at a local high school and have grown considerably since 1988. The Band is currently comprised of 25 members including 15 Pipers, 7 Drummers and 2 Drum Majors.
The Band has received numerous awards including the Near North Pipe Band competition which was held in Callender, Ontario in 2003.
The Greater Sudbury Police Pipe Band represents this Service and the Community unselfishly and is always willing to give a helping hand.
