The Greater Sudbury Police Services Board is comprised of five members; two Provincial appointees, two Regional Council appointees and one member of the community as appointed by Council.

The Board provides direction and guidance to the Greater Sudbury Police Service, while ensuring that adequate and effective police services are provided in accordance with the needs of the municipality.

At a minimum all of the following services are provided:

Crime Prevention

Law Enforcement

Assistance to Victims of Crime

Public Order Maintenance

Emergency Response

The municipality is responsible for providing the entire infrastructure necessary for providing such services including vehicles, boats, equipment, communication devices, buildings and supplies.

As civilian members who represent the public's interests, the Police Services Board is committed to a high quality of community-based policing and excellence in police governance. The Board recognizes the challenges to law enforcement created by a changing environment, demographic shifts, emerging technologies and evolving crime trends and patterns.

With the support of the citizens of Greater Sudbury, the Police Services Board is confident of meeting future policing challenges in the years ahead.

Duties of the Board:


The responsibilities of the Police Services Board are outlined in section 31 (1) of Ontario's Police Services Act.

appoint the members of the municipal police force;
generally determine, after consultation with the chief of police, objectives and priorities with respect to police services in the municipality;
establish policies for the effective management of the police force;
recruit and appoint the chief of police and any deputy chief of police, and annually determine their remuneration and working conditions, taking their submissions into account;
direct the chief of police and monitor his or her performance;
establish policies respecting the disclosure by chiefs of police of personal information about individuals;
receive regular reports from the chief of police on disclosures and decisions made under section 49 (secondary activities);
establish guidelines with respect to the indemnification of members of the police force for legal costs under section 50;
establish guidelines for dealing with complaints made under Part V;
review the chief of police's administration of the complaints system under Part V and receive regular reports from the chief of police on his or her administration of the complaints system.

Date: January 23, 2009

At their January 22, 2009 meeting, Dr. Rayudu Koka was re-elected Chair of the Greater Sudbury Police Services Board. Dr. Koka was first appointed to the Board February 16, 2005 by a Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services Order in Council and re-appointed for an additional three year period, March 28, 2007.


Dr. Koka thanked the members of the Board for their continued confidence and support, "This past year was one of many successes for the Police Service and I look forward to moving ahead in 2009 as we continue to address the needs of Sudbury. The Board dedicates its efforts in making our community a safe place to live and play". He went on to say that the "Board will be reviewing the results of the 2008 Business Plan and setting priorities for 2009". Dr. Koka also recognized the ongoing provincial government investment in policing in Ontario and again acknowledged with thanks the additional officers that Sudbury will see under the Police Officers Recruitment Fund.



At the same meeting, Councillor Ron Dupuis was re-elected to the post of Vice Chair. Councillor Dupuis was appointed by City of Greater Sudbury Council in December 2006. Councillor Dupuis also acknowledged the Board for their trust, confirming the Service Mission to provide quality policing in partnership with our community.



The Greater Sudbury Police Services Board 2009 is comprised of Chair, Dr. Rayudu Koka; Vice Chair, Councillor Ron Dupuis; and Board Members, Ms. Sandra Campbell, Mr. Dave Petryna and Councillor Russ Thompson.

Chief Davidson was also pleased with the election results. He extended his warmest congratulations acknowledging the Board for their commitment in ensuring that Sudbury is a leader in the provision of police services and is well-equipped to respond to emerging needs and trends.

The Greater Sudbury Police Service Board is a five-member civilian Board that governs the Greater Sudbury Police Service. Under the Police Services Act, the Board is responsible for providing adequate and effective police services to over 155,000 Greater Sudbury residents. The Board is required to elect a Chair and Vice Chair at the first meeting of each year.
